The Neighborhood Medical Center is located in census tract 6, an area known locally as Frenchtown. Once a vibrant African-American neighborhood and cultural center, Frenchtown is now an area of extensive poverty and unemployment. In this census tract the unemployment rate exceeds 20% and individuals living below the poverty level make up 52% of the population. Within a mile of NMC are two homeless shelters, a public housing project, a transitional shelter for formerly homeless families, and the central city bus terminal.
