Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin. In short, diabetes is a medical condition that prevents your body from using food normally. There are three types of diabetes; Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational. If you have type 1 diabetes, your body is no longer making insulin; type 2 is where your body may still make insulin, but it doesn’t work like it should, and gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. As of 2011, there were 25.8 million children and adults in the United States that had diabetes. The total costs associated with the diagnosis of diabetes in the United States in 2012 was $245 billion. Diabetes can be prevented or delayed with a few simple lifestyle changes. These changes include: changing your diet, increasing your level of physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Complications that are associated with diabetes include:
- Heart disease and stroke
- High blood pressure
- Kidney Disease
- Nervous System Disease
